In TheGameReviews.com’s first interview with the Dark Sector development team, we got a chance to ask about any differences between the PS3 and 360 versions. The answer: it will look the same on PS3 and the Xbox 360.
When Josh Austin, the producer for Dark Sector, was asked how the game would differ between the Xbox 360 and the PS3, Austin said that “this is what works on a 360, this is how this is how it’s going to have to be close to on the PS3.” Through the whole discussion, he was quite proud of the success they had with both systems.
Austin did admit, however, that the team hasn’t “figured out the PS3 entirely either but I can say confidently that it looks this good on the PS3, which is an achievement for most developers, [in fact] it looks exactly the same on the PS3.” Josh stressed that the development team “did not dummy down any textures” or “reduce the amount of effects on screen, stuff like that.” Austin said that the development team could have packed more content onto the PS3, but D3 wasn’t focusing on one console entirely for Dark Sector, as they couldn’t “because it’s so expensive, this new generation to make these games,” which lead to the decision “to do 360 and we had to do PS3 and frankly, the 360 has a better install base still.” At this point in the Dark Sector development process, however, the D3 team is “very confident and happy and excited that we actually made it look this good.”
Austin added that they did hit a snag in the process “We were like we’re going to have to start dummying down the textures and making it so it works, and a luckily we got past that when we figured it out.” To keep things on track, they had “An engineer on staff from Sony for like a week or something” that “came in and helped us out.” In the end, though, he attributed the current state of the Dark Sector development process as follows, “We got lucky and we got one right at a critical time that where we were going to make that decision and we got lucky basically. So part of it is luck, part of it is like these guys were really good and they did a lot of research for a long time.”
This is just part of what we discussed while over at D3 headquarters, expect to see full coverage of this title in the upcoming weeks, as we continue to cover all aspects on this exciting title. Check back often, as we will be adding new information from our visit daily.
